‘The Zoo' goes inside one of the most important and yet entertaining and iconic institutions in the whole of Great Britain - London Zoo in Regents Park. Here we will meet the dedicated professionals who, every day, live with and look after the Zoo’s most precious assets - the 15,000+ animals that are kept there.

This huge collection of wild animals needs an awful lot of careful looking after and that takes a massive amount of time – and an equally massive amount of money. Our series of films will meet the staff totally dedicated to doing the job. The Zoo gets no government funding – it’s a registered charity dependent on the money it raises from us the public. Not that long ago the zoo was threatened with closure for financial reasons and they are determined not to let that happen again. Now for the first time in more than ten years the zoo are allowing the cameras in to watch their work and the love and care they give all their residents.

Series 2 - Episode 2

With limited space at their iconic London site keepers constantly have to move animals around and they loan them to other zoos for breeding programmes. Amongst the most popular animals in the whole ZSL collection are their playful Californian sea lions. However their pool is being refurbished, forcing them and their keeper Alex to move to London temporarily and preventing Alex from teaching her sea lions a brand new show.

Series 2 - Episode 1

Keepers constantly face dilemmas about whether it is right to step in and hand-rear an animal or allow nature to take its course, even if that means the animal may not survive. At the zoo’s newest show piece exhibit, Penguin Beach, head bird keeper Adrian is under pressure to deliver a healthy batch of new born penguin chicks. Meanwhile, away from the public areas of the Zoo, head reptile keeper Ian is trying to raise awareness of a devastating frog plague and save one particular species from extinction.

Series 1 - Episode 1

The Zoo will highlight the incredible work that goes on behind the scenes at London Zoo – both at the Central London site and at Whipsnade. We will be on hand to witness everything from the drama of birth and the tragedy of illness and death. Perhaps the greatest and most heart rending dramas take place within the zoo’s veterinary hospital with its own specialist dedicated operating theatre. We will also see the day-to-day running of the Zoo.
