From the 1960’s the axe fell on 4,000 miles of Britain’s rail network. Now, decades later, Rob Bell is going on journey to uncover those lost railway lines. Every week Rob will explore a different line; experiencing the hidden landscapes, lost infrastructure and forgotten worlds that disappeared when the line closed. He’ll experience how, once gone, the lost line affected the community, industry and lifestyle of the area. But Rob will also be celebrating the new life that’s been created, from the old railway stations that are now beautiful homes to restored signal boxes and the impressive heritage railways that have sprung up all over the country. Across the series we’ll see Britain in a new and surprising way; whether it is in rural Wales, the Lake District, or the north of Scotland.

Series 2 - Episode 3: North Wales

In Bangor, Rob explores a lost line built as early as 1801, to transport Welsh slate from the local quarry, down to the port. It was a private line, built, owned and controlled by the all-powerful Pennant Family, who’s fantastical mock-medieval home Rob visits. Their old quarry, was once the largest in the world, but is now a giant, mile-wide hole… the perfect place, Rob discovers, for the world’s fastest zip-line.

Series 2 - Episode 2: The Durham Coalfields

Rob starts his journey on Wearside, where numerous short horse-drawn waggonways once pulled coal down to the river to be sailed downstream and out into the North Sea. But for Britain’s industrialisation to hit overdrive, an altogether slicker system was needed. In modern Sunderland, Rob finds the solution - the world’s first railway designed for steam locomotives. With the 1822 Hetton Railway, designed by George Stephenson, it was full steam ahead – not only for coal, but for railways too.

Series 2 - Episode 1: Derbyshire

From Matlock to the spa town splendour of Buxton, Rob unearths a tale of Victorian ambition, and with the help of a helicopter ride, sees why such a challenging (some might say crazy!) route was chosen for the railway. And half a century since it closed, its become perhaps the most celebrated lost railway in the country… a route filled with great engineering, and now a cherished part of the Peak District National Park.
