In this ‘Private Lives’ strand, we’ve turned our attention not only to some very interesting royal figures but also to a number of the most powerful and controversial figures in world history. Some changed the course of history forever while others became notorious stains on its pages. Others still gave their names to entire eras. But, as we saw in Private Lives of the Tudors and Private Lives of Monarchs, it doesn’t matter how powerful or how influential they were – they all had the same human foibles as the rest of us; and in their way those parts of their lives were every bit as fascinating. Tracy Borman travels, meets, explores and investigates all in an attempt to discover the people behind the personality.

Edward VIII

Was a member of the British Royal family ever more famous for the complexities of his private life than Edward VIII, the King who abdicated for love? What a stir his 1936 abdication caused. With the malign shadow of Nazism hanging over it, the world – and particularly Britain – was an uncertain place; there were not exactly waves of sympathy for a King prepared to give up his duties for the love of a woman.

Napoleon

Admiral Lord Nelson and The Duke of Wellington finally did for his naval fleet and his armies, but not before the Emperor had cast his dark shadow across continental Europe. The monster who asked: ‘What are the lives of a million men to a man such as I?’ was actually a sensitive soul when it came to women – his love for the fair Josephine is well known, less so the string of affairs he embarked upon when he found out that she was being unfaithful, or the woman with whom he had a child.

Princess Margaret

Before Princess Diana took Royal-watching to a new level, it was Princess Margaret, the Queen’s sister, who was the focus for the paparazzi the world over. Let’s not be coy, it isn’t hard to see why. She was drop-dead gorgeous, impossible glamorous and, outwardly at least, everything a Princess should be. Let’s not be coy, it isn’t hard to see why.
